Gallery Books |  I often feel fortunate that I was so young when I experienced TMS and became relieved of it. At age 18, it was hard to attribute the pain to most other sources, and I was open enough to consider an “unconventional” diagnosis. Then I was lucky enough to take what I learned about the mind-body connection into the rest of my adult life and apply it. And now as a psychotherapist, I help my patients to make the connection between their physical health and inner-life as well, and introduce them to TMS and how they can recover from it. As someone who has recovered herself, it does not become just an act of generosity, but a sense of duty to help people find what works to become pain-free!

Is it just midlife, or is your thyroid slowing down? Meditation, guided visualization, body scanning and slow, diaphragmatic breathing are some of the many techniques that achieve relaxation.  Biofeedback uses sensitive electronic instruments to measure your physiology (muscle tension, heart rate, blood flow to extremities, brain activity, etc.). This feedback enables your body to learn to relax by providing information about how your efforts are working.

Avalon Travel I can never express my gratitude completely for your work and your ability to communicate it to everyone through your writing. I was a TMS poster child, growing up with so many symptoms that I know now are indicative of TMS. My twenties were spent in pain and I was consistently told by every doctor I saw that someone my age shouldn’t be having these problems. My X-rays showed no disks at all L5-L4-L3. I had severe muscle spasms in my neck and literally couldn’t hold my head up and had to use a soft cervical collar. I began to have problems just talking to doctors about my problems and going to a new doctor was agony. I was able to find some help with the use of medication and acupuncture, but not lasting help.
Mandapeta The Mindbody Prescription Print Newsstand  692    ABOUT US “Stand up throughout the day to stretch your body appropriately, the way it is meant to be stretched. The simple act of standing as tall as possible for a minute or two will help break the pattern of sitting, as long as you repeat it frequently. Be sure that while standing you take full deep breaths to expand your torso as well. We often have very shallow breath while we sit, counter that with big deep breaths as often as you can throughout the day.

Following chapters will talk about the psychology of TMS (which is where it all begins), its physiology and how it is treated. Conventional diagnosis and treatment will be reviewed and I will conclude with a chapter on the important interaction between mind and body in matters of health and illness.
At the end of each day Dad would just look at me. He knew how bad my back had been all those years, and he had real difficulty reconciling the work I was doing with my past condition. I kept reassuring him that I had no pain, and I finished the work with complete freedom of movement.
Lumbar radiculopathy: Lumbar radiculopathy is nerve irritation that is caused by damage to the discs between the vertebrae. Damage to the disc occurs because of degeneration (“wear and tear”) of the outer ring of the disc, traumatic injury, or both. As a result, the central softer portion of the disc can rupture (herniate) through the outer ring of the disc and abut the spinal cord or its nerves as they exit the bony spinal column. This rupture is what causes the commonly recognized “sciatica” pain of a herniated disc that shoots from the low back and buttock down the leg. Sciatica can be preceded by a history of localized low-back aching or it can follow a “popping” sensation and be accompanied by numbness and tingling. The pain commonly increases with movements at the waist and can increase with coughing or sneezing. In more severe instances, sciatica can be accompanied by incontinence of the bladder and/or bowels. The sciatica of lumbar radiculopathy typically affects only one side of the body, such as the left side or right side, and not both. Lumbar radiculopathy is suspected based on the above symptoms. Increased radiating pain when the lower extremity is lifted supports the diagnosis. Nerve testing (EMG/electromyogramspina bifida

My friend Lynne’s back is tweaking, so she asked me to write about how I recovered from 2 1/2 years of chronic back pain using a combination of mindfulness and John Sarno’s book, “Healing Back Pain.” I found it helpful to incorporate my mindfulness practice into the process of recovery, even though the book was extremely helpful.
Food + Recipes Rest. This may sound so obvious that it is not even worth mentioning. However, often we push ourselves beyond endurance just to get things done or we get a good day and decide to do everything at once while we’re feeling good, making pain worse later. Pace yourself and take a break when you get tired.
Brain Quest Workbook Pre-K ISBN-10: 0446557684 ~ p. 27–8 A: Dr. Sarno was a practitioner. He wasn’t a research scientist. Some people fault him and ask, “Why didn’t he do research?” Because he was dealing with patients and research wasn’t what he did. But one of his students, David Schechter, who practices now in Los Angeles, looked at the data and did a study. They called 51 patients a few years after the treatment and found that most of them were doing better [pain scores decreased 52 percent for “average” pain; 35 percent for “worst” pain; and and 65 percent for “least” pain], which is astounding — most people never get over chronic pain if they are going through treatment methods. This stuff is rising. People are aware of it.
