I think the real question goes back to what Dr. Sarno said in the forward to his book: If you are treating the symptomatology without understanding the cause, you are going to get an epidemic. And I think he’s right. What he is pointing out is that the vast majority of chronic pain symptoms are the repression of one’s emotions. When we repress our emotions, it really throws our autonomic nervous system out of balance. It’s related to essentially a fear response.

Totally agree that repression of emotions creates stress in the body that causes pain. Yet there is still so little emotional intelligence out there. We are simply not conditioned to honor what we feel. I have found the book: Nondual Therapy: The Psychology of Awakening (By Georgi Johnson) tremendously helpful in the journey into the genius of emotional stress patterns, and the qualities that help release them.

Cassette Steve I can’t imagine that my hyperactive trapezius muscles started out this way as an infant or were genetically predetermined. I have almost no doubt that my years of bad posture, high-stress lifestyle, Type A personality, and frequent use of a computer have made me rely on them, while the other muscles of my upper back and rotator cuff have atrophied and lost their will to contract.

Start by lying on your stomach with your legs extended and with palms planted on either side of your head with your forearms and elbows flat on the ground. Slowly, push your body upwards, so your weight is resting on your forearms. Be sure to keep your hips on the ground. Once you reach a comfortable position that gently stretches your abdominal muscles and lower back, hold for 10 seconds. Slowly return to starting position and repeat five times. If you have more flexibility in your lower back, try straightening your arms.

Dr. Nick Chretien It is interesting to speculate how the world got along without back surgery for so long. I suspect that even though the family physicians of seventy-five years ago were unaware of the existence of TMS [same as MPS — Paul], they tended not to take back pain or ‘sciatica’ very seriously. Mustard plasters were widely used and probably brought about relaxation of muscle spasm through the heat generated by the plaster. Sometimes folk medicine is more sensible than ‘modern’ medicine. In any case, I suspect that the low-key, nonthreatening approach to back problems characterized by an earlier time helped to prevent the kind of long-term, disastrous courses that exist today.

Super Sketch EUR 14,03 Prime Orbit Publishing Lower back pain is among the chief reasons people go to see a doctor in the US, and nearly a third of American adults say they’ve been afflicted. The US spends approximately $90 billion a year on back pain — more than the annual expenditures on high blood pressure, pregnancy and postpartum care, and depression — and that doesn’t include the estimated $10 billion to $20 billion in back pain-related lost productivity.

I got about 3/4 through this book and then moved and never picked it back up. However, the last 1/4 of the book are examples of diagnoses with Sarno’s comments on its relevance to TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome). I gave the book 4 stars b/c I thought the last 1/4 was a bit redundant.
ça mérite de tenter le coup pour tous ceux qui ont un pb chronique, mais faut une certaine ouverture d’esprit pour admettre les principes, même si intuitivement beaucoup sentent qu’il y a un lien entre tension psychologique et tension dans le corps
As many as 75 to 85 percent of the population will experience a back problem at some time in their lives. In most cases, this pain is mechanical in nature – it is NOT caused by a serious medical condition, such as inflammatory arthritis or fracture.

Conventional medicine is not very effective at treating this kind of pain, which is often attributed to spinal features like slipped or herniated disks that are supposedly irritating or compressing spinal nerves. Yet these spinal features are common in people without pain, are inconsistently associated with pain (1), and surgery to correct them is often no more effective than “placebo surgery” in which an incision is made but the features aren’t corrected (2). Injection of powerful anti-inflammatory drugs into the area of the spine that is supposedly causing pain is also no more effective than injecting saline (3). Nearly everyone shows some degree of disc degeneration by the age of 20– it’s evidently normal. Furthermore, a neurologist will tell you that the signs and symptoms of garden-variety back pain are usually difficult to reconcile with a diagnosis of spinal nerve compression.
A: Dr. Sarno was a practitioner. He wasn’t a research scientist. Some people fault him and ask, “Why didn’t he do research?” Because he was dealing with patients and research wasn’t what he did. But one of his students, David Schechter, who practices now in Los Angeles, looked at the data and did a study. They called 51 patients a few years after the treatment and found that most of them were doing better [pain scores decreased 52 percent for “average” pain; 35 percent for “worst” pain; and and 65 percent for “least” pain], which is astounding — most people never get over chronic pain if they are going through treatment methods. This stuff is rising. People are aware of it.

Vegetables Too much tension and tightness can cause back pain. “Our goal in increasing flexibility is to put an equal load throughout the body from the feet all the way up to the head,” Davis says. “One good exercise is to sit on the edge of the bed with one leg extended and the other one on the floor. Give your hamstrings a stretch by leaning forward while keeping your back in a neutral position.”
