BMR author program I noticed one incredible effect after doing this experiment: the back pain I’ve struggled with for many years simply disappeared! Normally, it would start after I’d walk or stand for more than 30 minutes, but after I reduced my sitting, the pain vanished. Posted May 19th, 2016 at 2:53 am You have to experience it to believe how dramatic these effects can be. It blew my mind and I became somewhat obsessed telling people about it...only to observe a glazed face reaction :D Chronic pain is a total bitch to deal with and in my blog I listed over 30 different approaches I took to try and beat it. Until I read a damn $5 book! its one of those too good to be true things and didn't read the book for 9 months after buying. Anyways thanks for bringing this to wider attention. it needs some serious study GONE GIRL Usually, some physical activity precedes the back pain, like picking up a heavy object, sneezing, bending over, or getting out of bed. The thinking goes, “Well, since I didn’t have pain before the activity, the activity must have caused the pain.” As you’ll see in the next few chapters, the reality is a bit more complicated. In many cases, a physical activity can trigger a pain episode, but by itself, it isn’t the underlying cause. Sarno, MD, professor of rehabilitation medicine at New York University School of Medicine and attending physician at the Howard A. Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at the NYU Medical Center (retired).  He has coined a name for this extremely common psychosomatic pain syndrome: tension myoneural syndrome (TMS).  Over the years, he has successfully treated thousands of patients for TMS by 1) ruling out structural causes for their pain, 2) giving them the right diagnosis, and 3) addressing the psychosomatic problem directly.  The fastest and most effective treatment is simply to become aware of the nature of the problem, after which it tends to resolve quickly. Understanding this helped me see more clearly the role physical pain was playing in my life and how it was helping me avoid some not-so-pretty emotional stuff. There’s so much more going on for someone with TMS than just the physical pain of the moment. The body is intended to work and function in a reciprocal fashion. Meaning, the body works all together to perform every movement. So if there is a weak link, such as muscular or joint dysfunction, it will negatively impact the rest of the body. Therefore, if we can incorporate the most essential component of basic human movement (which is walking), more often into daily living, we can reap the benefits of a healthy lower back and increased functional capacity. I've been having mid-back and/or lower back pain for several years now. I came upon Jesse's book a couple of years ago, and purchased the inversion table which helped me immensely. A few months ago I started having pretty bad mid-back pain and about two weeks ago I purchased Jesse's program. I did the assessment and I started to work on the muscle imbalance and stretching. My mid-back pain stopped after the first week!!! I am working on this program daily so my muscle "forget" the bad habits, they become stronger and more elastic. I'm combining this with inversion table and I'm pretty sure that in thenext few months I'll regain the strength, elasticity, balance my body needs. Thank You! To learn more about the dangers of too much sitting and the importance of regularly getting out of your chair, I recommend you to see my interview with Dr. Joan Vernikos, author of Sitting Kills, Moving Heals and former director of NASA's Life Sciences Division. Dr. Vernikos, who was one of the primary doctors that ensured the health of the astronauts as they went into space, gives a very intensive explanation on how you can simply and easily counteract the ill effects of sitting. I have not yet tried it, but I'm about to do so.(less) I’ll talk about the many faces of TMS in another post, but I think it’s important to recognise at the outset that this condition can manifest in so many different ways. Dr Sarno worked initially with back, neck and shoulder pain, but there are many more examples of how TMS manifests as painful symptoms and conditions. These include headaches, migraines, pelvic pain, irritable bowel and other gastrointestinal complaints, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel and repetitive strain syndromes, TMJ, vertigo, dizziness, insomnia and even psychological equivalents such as anxiety, depression, phobias and disorders. Smoking decreases oxygen to the various tissues that have difficulty getting oxygen in the first place, such as the discs in your spine. Research has shown a high prevalence of spinal stenosis (a condition where the spinal canal is not large enough for the spinal cord) among smokers. Smoking also is a risk factor for osteoporosis, which can lead to painful vertebral fractures. Back pain researchers and doctors generally didn’t find Sarno convincing — and many still don’t. Andrea Furlan, a psychiatrist who has published numerous systematic reviews on back pain, says the big problem with Sarno’s approach was that it was too “one-size-fits-all.” Some people’s back pain may be exacerbated by emotional problems or stress, but not everyone’s. “I think it is a mistake to generalize [the mind-body model] to all people with back pain,” Furlan said. Free excursions and onboard activities Even if you're not depressed, your doctor may prescribe antidepressant medications as part of the treatment for chronic low back pain. It's not clear how antidepressants help relieve chronic pain. It is believed that antidepressants' influence on chemical messengers may affect pain signals in the body. Although some physicians would dispute the idea, there is a fairly wide acceptance among practicing doctors that ulcers are caused primarily by "tension." Contrary to logic, however, the major focus in treatment is "medical," not "psychological," and drugs are prescribed to neutralize or prevent the secretion of acid. back pain relief lying down | chronic back pain gpnotebook back pain relief lying down | back pain home treatment tips back pain relief lying down | back pain relief exercise images
