My new doctor, feeling the extreme soreness I had on my hip and outside of my quad and outside of my knee, diagnosed me with IT (iliotibial band) syndrome. I contined with physical therapy. Once I was diagnosed with IT band syndrome (the tissue that runs from the hip to the knee is affected), my HIP started to hurt. Soon it was mostly hip pain, so I got a steroid injection in my hip. It did not help. Physical therapy did not help. The pain started on the other hip, too. I despaired. I spent thousands on acupuncture and massage.

I was initially diagnosed with a bulging disc on the sciatic nerve which began “my life with a bad back”. After decades of seeing numerous medical specialists and receiving numerous treatments which included surgery, acupuncture, physio sessions, epidurals, and facet joint injections my pain persisted and increased. All of these only gave me temporary relief, if that. Gradually, I slowly but surely lost the ability to lead a normal life. The last 10 years in particular were quite bad as I was living with an average level of 8/10 pain, not being able to sit for more than a minute or two without extreme pain, and avoiding many of the activities one takes part in as part of a normal life. Somehow though I soldiered on by continuously adjusting my life, but the effect of the pain was really starting to take its toll mentally, no different really than being in a torture chamber. Eventually I reached the stage where I had given up any sort of hope of reducing my back pain and became resigned to the fact that I would just have to somehow live a life of taking prescription pain killers, and avoiding anything that caused my back pain to increase above the already ‘normal’ but high pain levels. In the end, no other treatment seemed to give me even a slight reprieve from pain, not even as a placebo. Even the pain killers slowly started to become ineffective requiring higher dosages. Looking back it is clear all of these treatments were aimed at the symptoms rather than the cause. I, as well as my family, had become a prisoner to my back pain.

"There's no hard-and-fast rule," says Sean Mackey, chief of the division of pain medicine at Stanford University, "but if your mattress is sagging significantly or is more than 6 to 8 years old, I'd think about getting a new one. Something else to consider: a firm mattress may not do your back any favors, says Carmen R. Green, a physician at the University of Michigan Back & Pain Center. A number of studies over the years suggest that people with lower back pain who sleep on medium-firm mattresses do better than those with firm beds.

When the first 24 hours are over, you can turn to heat to cure back pain fast at home. Heat helps to ease the strained muscle and reduce tension. It can help to increase range of motion and reduce pain. In this case, you want to bring the healing blood to the site, and heat will do that, dilating the blood vessels and encouraging blood flow. Don’t let the heating pad get too hot and don’t use it for more than an hour or so at a time. The heat can hurt your skin, leading to more problems. Here’s how heat therapy works to make you feel better.
More than 80% of the population will suffer with some form of back pain at least once in their lifetime. As staggering and worrying a statistic as that is, back pain is also the most frequent cause of activity limitation in people younger the 45 years old! One of the most common areas of the spine that is affected by pain is the lumbar spine with lower back pain affecting over half of all back pain sufferers.
Treatment: Chiropractic care restores mobility by manipulating joints and the spine; it often incorporates massage. Dr. Sarno's Work Even exercise, which a majority of experts agree is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy back and chase away aches and pains, can be problematic. "When you're sedentary, the muscles supporting the spine get weaker, and you're more prone to injury," Dr. Katz says. But "exercising with improper form — rounding the back when doing dead lifts or arching it during ab work — can place unwanted stress on the spine," notes Robyn Stuhr, a spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise.

My back was making its own efforts to heal, but the improvements were too slow for the fast pace of the Air Force. I felt pressured for time. I tried to accelerate the healing process with anything I could get my hands on -- pills, electronic devices such as infra-red lamps, TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulators), heating pads, traction devices, hanging boots, braces, balms, and plenty of other stuff.
Family & After injuring myself overtraining for a marathon as a seventeen year old I ended up severely damaging nearly every ligament from my hips down. The doctors said to not run again for at least two years. However, the injuries never properly healed and I suffered constant but manageable pain. A few years later I started having back pain and five years ago I had an x-ray of my back done and what it revealed was a back twisted like a pretzel. By this time I was eating eight Mersyndol each night just to get two-hours sleep. I started receiving treatment with a chiropractor, which made a big difference. Most days I would feel only low-level pain and experience severe pain a couple days before my regular fortnightly appointment, but I couldn't sit for long periods. On plane trips between Perth and Melbourne I would spend most of the flight standing in the aisle. Since starting to use Heal-n-Soothe, Rub on Relief, Lose the Back System, 7-Day Back Pain Cure Book and the Freedom Back the pain stopped. Within a couple days it reduced significantly, and a couple of weeks later it was just gone. A month later I flew to Guangzhou from Perth and sat in an economy class seat for eight hours comfortably. Even on the flight back with an injured shoulder I slept soundly. These days my chiropractor is astounded by the change, and the careless ease with which I move around. I no longer have to be careful to avoid pain. It has now been six weeks since my last chiropractic appointment and I still feel great.

Humira is touted to help treat ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton, which includes the spine. Upon impact, Bob would be sent flying.
