Facebook Todd Hargrove is a friend of mine and we've talked at length about this issue. I've also read most of his book. It's not an area of expertise for me but I think his ideas make a lot of sense. However, nothing has helped my pain like Sarno's book. In fact, reading Healing Back Pain is the only thing that has made any significant difference out of the many approaches I tried over a decade. As I said in my post, I don't know whether Sarno's mechanism is exactly correct and I think it should be subjected to more research, but I can say confidently that his technique has tremendous therapeutic value for me and many others.
