Science suggests it might work — but the squishiness of the findings, combined with the lack of scientific underpinning in acupuncture’s philosophy, leaves room for interpretation. And evidence-based medicine thinkers and skeptics view the results of studies as suggestive of nothing more than acupuncture’s potent placebo effect.

I've had mild-to-moderate chronic pain for as long as I can remember-- even as a child. In middle school, the postural muscles in my back and neck would become tired and painful when I sat in a chair for too long, so I'd study laying down on my bed. I had periodic muscle spasms affecting my neck and upper back (attributed to "pinched nerve" or torticollis), which were not only painful but would produce an asymmetrical head and neck posture that I had to live with for days.
Medical societies and public health agencies are now advising doctors to try less invasive options and even alternative therapies such as acupuncture before considering opioids or surgery.
I had a back injury as a result of repetitive lifting in a work environment. Three herniated disks, the upper one being the most serious as it is against a nerve root Before being allowed to see a Dr the HR department made me go first to a chiropractor. I got relief after the first visit. Maintained after the second and the last two made it worse. Finally was sent on to a DR. I took a lot of prednisone and had cortisone shots in the back. Time did more then the medication... medication caused other health problems. The exercise was the most helpful treatment but the hardest to start. The shooting pain wasn't just down the leg but around my body... pretty much anyplace from my waist to my knees. I found that cutting caffeine and really pushing water was when I had the first noticeable improvement. Allowing the body to rehydrate the disks was something I learned from a nurse practitioner and it allowed me to really begin the exercise therapy. Others recommended bicycling. I cannot do that still. It causes too much side to side movement on the lower back. The only bicycling I can do is on a recumbent stationary. My greatest luck has been with pilates type exercises for the core and light to moderate weight training. Even after five years I cannot stand at the counter and do dishes with out significant pain. I cannot stand on concrete floors for more then about forty-five minutes without developing a limp. For pain, my best friend is my TENS machine.

In 11 studies of more than 1,100 people, this Chinese medicine staple improved symptoms of lower back pain better than simulated treatments and, yes, in some cases, NSAIDs. The needles appear to change the way your nerves react and may reduce inflammation around joints (which is only one of the therapy's benefits), says DeStefano.

I first came across the back pain guru months ago in my research. But I was skeptical of his theories, which were largely based on hunches and anecdote. He admitted that he never tested his ideas with controlled studies, saying he’d rather spend his time healing patients at his New York University practice than doing research. At first glance, he seemed like an outdated Freudian.

A friend of mine was randomly complaining about her constant back pain that had been plaguing her for some time. Her doctor told her the same hogwash they told me; slipped discs and jargon. I told her my story and explained to her your theories of TMS. She accepted them and a week later she was pain free. That’s all it took to help someone else!
