As I hope I have argued by now, the Alexander Technique is radically different from yoga or changing one’s posture by standing at a desk rather than sitting. It does not attempt to address posture directly, by, for example, trying to ‘stand up straight’ or ‘pull one’s shoulders back’, etc. All such ‘posture’ approaches make the unwarranted assumption that it is possible to be shown what good posture is, and then achieve it by an exercise of will (‘doing something’). Alexander pointed out that that this belief is a delusion, since for the majority of people their kinaesthesia (sense of muscle tension and relation of body part to part) is unreliable, and cannot be trusted as a guide to better postural balance or co-ordination.
