(13) Corbis / Corbis RF I read his book about 10 years ago after several years of unrelenting low back pain. Prior to consulting an orthopedic surgeon I gave the book a chance, but experienced minimal success. I read Dr. John Sopher's "To be or not to be pain free" and Howard Schubiner's "Unlearn Your Pain" which both take Dr. Sarno's TMS theories to their logical conclusions and include detailed workbooks and exercises.
Affiliate Program Back in 1984, Sarno attributed back pain to a phenomenon he called “tension myositis syndrome.” At roughly the same time, myofascial pain syndrome was being much more thoroughly defined and studied by the famous physician Dr. Janet Travell, who worked for President Kennedy, and her research partner Dr. David Simons. Drs. Travell and Simons spent their careers studying MPS, and 1991 they published the first edition of their seminal textbook, Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual. Although far from perfect (see Trigger Points on Trial) these books were and still are (in new editions) much more medically and scientifically influential, with broader clinical implications.

Astaxanthin has very potent anti-inflammatory properties. In some cases, it may even be more effective than NSAIDs. You may need to take high doses of this antioxidant (as much as eight milligrams a day), though, to achieve this benefit.
Usually, some physical activity precedes the back pain, like picking up a heavy object, sneezing, bending over, or getting out of bed. The thinking goes, “Well, since I didn’t have pain before the activity, the activity must have caused the pain.” As you’ll see in the next few chapters, the reality is a bit more complicated. In many cases, a physical activity can trigger a pain episode, but by itself, it isn’t the underlying cause.
Those researchers suggested that a combination of exercises — strength training, aerobic exercise, flexibility training — may be most helpful to patients, and that there seemed to be no clear winners among the different approaches but that each had its own benefits.
