Email to a Friend Why self-motivated and successful people are prone to Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) Sarno, a former professor of rehabilitation medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, posits that bodily pain is caused by repressing one’s emotions and by stress, not by physical ailments. According to Sarno, “goodists,” or people who put other’s needs ahead of their own, are the most likely to suffer from chronic pain with emotional underpinnings.
Another effect stress has on the body, is it affects your breathing patterns, which can over time cause dysfunctional breathing patterns. My understanding is the diaphragm and the action of breadth is essential for proper deep core functions and stability which is essential for back health.

Price: 8 851 USD AbeBooks Here is my personal story. I've had mild-to-moderate chronic pain for as long as I can remember-- even as a child. In middle school, the postural muscles in my back and neck would become tired and painful when I sat in a chair for too long, so I'd study laying down on my bed. I had periodic muscle spasms affecting my neck and upper back (attributed to "pinched nerve" or torticollis), which were not only painful but would produce an asymmetrical head and neck posture that I had to live with for days.

Etiquette & Manners 1. Stop covering up your feelings. In the past, if someone said something offensive towards me, I would cover up the feeling by thinking about it, rationalizing why they said, what they said, the context, blah blah blah but the FEELING is what is important. My mind would say I'm not offended but the truth is I am. FEEL THAT FEELING and tell yourself it's ok to feel this. I am ok.
Trying medical marijuana now but not sure if it is what I really need. Over the years since then I have had chronic neck pain, an ulcer and chronic knee pain. I suffered these for a while until I remembered your book, and was able to heal every one of them, instantly, once I realized it was TMS.

Assumption 3 (implicit): ‘The Alexander Technique is somehow similar in its approach or efficacy to working with posture when doing yoga or using a standing desk’. As I hope I have argued by now, the Alexander Technique is radically different from yoga or changing one’s posture by standing at a desk rather than sitting. It does not attempt to address posture directly, by, for example, trying to ‘stand up straight’ or ‘pull one’s shoulders back’, etc. All such ‘posture’ approaches make the unwarranted assumption that it is possible to be shown what good posture is, and then achieve it by an exercise of will (‘doing something’). Alexander pointed out that that this belief is a delusion, since for the majority of people their kinaesthesia (sense of muscle tension and relation of body part to part) is unreliable, and cannot be trusted as a guide to better postural balance or co-ordination.

Spotlight “For fifteen years, my life revolved around my back. I took time off from work, conducted meetings lying on the floor and slept with ice bags. Could this be psychogenic? I had considered Dr. Sarno's ideas preposterous, but ten years ago I was talked into seeing him. I haven't had back problems since. If Dr. Sarno is right a about other psychogenic pain, America is wasting billions of dollars. What a tragedy.” —John Stossel, correspondent, 20/20
