Sarno is the only expert I know of who is willing to say that spondylolisthesis and stenosis are rarely primary causes of low back pain even when they are obviously present, and he has only his clinical experience to support the claim. However, his experience is significant, particularly in light of all the other evidence that structural deformities do not cause low back pain. It’s not a great leap! With regards to spondylolisthesis, Sarno writes: “I have had a number of patients with this abnormality and have found in each case that the patient also had TMS [same as MPS — PI]. In every case the pain was eliminated by proper treatment for TMS, suggeting that spondylolisthesis was not the cause” (p25). This is followed by a “dramatic case history.” With regards to stenosis, “… it has been my experience this ‘abnormality’ is rarely responsible for leg or back pain” (p27). For my part, for now I accept that these two conditions may cause pain, but not inevitably — and I eagerly await the day when research is done to investigate Sarno’s claim.

Select Decade Couch to 5K 2.6 So then what? The missing muscle piece I've been having mid-back and/or lower back pain for several years now. I came upon Jesse's book a couple of years ago, and purchased the inversion table which helped me immensely. A few months ago I started having pretty bad mid-back pain and about two weeks ago I purchased Jesse's program. I did the assessment and I started to work on the muscle imbalance and stretching. My mid-back pain stopped after the first week!!! I am working on this program daily so my muscle "forget" the bad habits, they become stronger and more elastic. I'm combining this with inversion table and I'm pretty sure that in thenext few months I'll regain the strength, elasticity, balance my body needs. Thank You!

Beth@WeightMaven said... L3 My experience was similar to yours, Stephan, while I read 'Healing Back Pain' in 2010. I saw myself....a lightbulb moment. I have also bought several copies of Sarno's books and given them out. I would say it has been 99.9 % effective for me. Most people I have given the book to assumed they knew what it was about and didn't read it...but just wrote it off. Or, they lied and said they read it but I knew they didn't by the incorrect things they said about it. Many people just aren't open to the whole concept. Their loss. I am glad I was one of.the 20% for whom it worked. Thanks for posting about this. I hope you reach more people with this post.
Times Print Gallery Back pain - returning to work During this period, I read all the experts' books on back pain and was not getting the answers I wanted so I threw them away and surrendered to the guidance of my own intuition and inner spirit. Because I was basically charting unexplored territory, I decided to trust my instincts and proceed from a very fundamental level.

The workups showed two herniated discs but nothing else that was exceptional. The PT temporarily relieved my pain, but it returned all too soon. Chiropractic had a similar result, as did cranio-sacral therapy. I increased my daily exercise regime and added stretching. Still no relief from the chronic night-time pain.
