Community Doctors & Hospitals Loved reading your post and agree with you wholeheartedly. As a physio, this is something I see clinically on a daily basis and yet most physicians and many physios and other providers still look for "an issue with the tissues" in a futile attempt to explain pain. Feldenkrais wrote back in the '50s how erroneous it was to think of having two lives - psychic and somatic. Our experiences are embodied and pain is perceived based on the perception of threat - regardless of whether or not that threat is real.
HEALTH MAGAZINE – By Matthew Solan Professionally-verified articles * Usually, this involves some new location for the pain, such as knee pain, which I initially assume is due to a repetitive stress injury like tendonitis. I give myself some rest. When the pain doesn't subside and persists for longer than it should have taken the injury to heal, I start to think it's TMS. Then, I'll go back to Sarno's book and see that the location is one of those that can be affected by TMS. The pain usually disappears within minutes, and I immediately resume vigorous exercise without further pain.

Colorectal Cancer Risks Lower back pain exercise 3: Training the stability of your lower back Monitor Breakfast I don't know how I stumbled upon these reviews initially. I do know that it was after a year of entirely disabling, perplexing, and shifting symptoms that culminated with a "herniated disc" diagnosis, an epidural steroid injection that made things worse, and ever-increasing dispair that I would ever have my once very active life back. Since these reviews are what led me to read this book (despite the fact that I'm scientifically minded and inclined to believe and trust doctors in general, maybe too much), I thought I would add my own story. For the record (since I doubted whether these reviews were real - it seems implausible), I am a REAL person. This is difficult to believe, but real.

Reply What's that chest pain? » Visit WebMD on Twitter What To Try When You Just Can’t Fall Asleep In Sarno's defense, he's an MD who published Healing Back Pain in 1991, at a time when presumably a lot of the information you're referring to was unknown. He's a clinician rather than a researcher so he was probably not on the cutting edge of information. He developed his ideas in the 1970s and he's now long retired and in his 90s. Regardless of how he justifies it mechanistically, he did develop a system that appears to work well.
For one thing, excess TV time is probably cutting into exercise time, and we've already explained how important exercise is to prevent/reduce back pain. In one Norwegian study of teens, those who sat in front of TV or computer for 15 hours a week or more were three times as likely to have lower-back pain as their more active counterparts. "They sit with the low back flexed, really hunched over, for hours," explains lead researcher Astrid Noreng Sjolie, PhD, a physiotherapist at Hedmark University College in Norway.

Narcotic pain medications. Narcotic medications, also called opioids or painkillers, alter one’s perception of pain by weakening signals sent to the brain. Narcotic medications are most often used for treating intense, short-term pain, such as acute pain after an operation. Narcotics are rarely used to treat long-term pain, as they have many side effects and can easily become addictive.

Testimony My name is Marjorie, 47, and I have lived with chronic pain for too many years, it affecting how I raised my three children, how I went about my daily life and the person I thought I’d become. I read MindBody Prescription and Healing Back Pain and it changed me. I want to thank you for showing me, and so many others, that many times there is nothing physically ‘broken’ and that life does go on once we acknowledge that. It has allowed me to address emotional issues, stressors and let go of the guilt of being a parent with chronic pain for all those years. I am not a hundred percent pain-free yet, but my attitude has changed drastically and I face my fears head-on because I know that it’s “all mental”.

Site Index Dear Dr. Sarno: Lower back pain is one of the leading conditions among the United States population. This commonly leads to people becoming more inactive, or leading people to believe they need to completely stop exercising altogether in order to let it heal. Instead of using lower back pain as an excuse to do absolutely nothing, the better alternative is to proactively work around the pain, or to exercise in an intelligent way to alleviate the symptoms.
