After reviewing data regarding various treatments for lower back pain, the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality concluded that those suffering from back pain should first try conservative/natural treatments and then consider other options for lower back pain relief if pain persists. Oftentimes low back pain sufferers can find relief naturally by making changes to their lifestyles (including sleep, physical activity, stress and body weight) before choosing more intensive care options.

Jeff Winders in Corvallis, Oregon Executive Editor, Harvard Men's Health Watch Once your doctor rules out serious issues like cancer, fracture, infection, and arthritis, a back scan is an unnecessary expense. “Everyone else has ‘non-specific’ low back pain and we manage it in the same way,” says the lead author of the Lancet research, professor Rachelle Buchbinder, PhD, a researcher of clinical epidemiology at Monash University in Australia. “Unfortunately sometimes patients become very focused on needing to find a specific diagnosis.” Although back pain sufferers may push for scans, says Dr. Buchbinder, the evidence indicates that imaging isn’t much help in identifying the source of pain.
I don't know how I stumbled upon these reviews initially. I do know that it was after a year of entirely disabling, perplexing, and shifting symptoms that culminated with a "herniated disc" diagnosis, an epidural steroid injection that made things worse, and ever-increasing dispair that I would ever have my once very active life back. Since these reviews are what led me to read this book (despite the fact that I'm scientifically minded and inclined to believe and trust doctors in general, maybe too much), I thought I would add my own story. For the record (since I doubted whether these reviews were real - it seems implausible), I am a REAL person. This is difficult to believe, but real.

Neck Back Shoulder Elbow Hand & Wrist Hip & Thigh Knee & Lower Leg Foot & Ankle Another way to cure back pain fast at home is to use muscle creams and patches. You may have seen these advertised as the sticky patches that extend across your back, and they are effective to a degree. Many different companies make these types of products, but the two most popular are Ben Gay and Icy Hot. The medication in the patch or cream works to “confuse” the nerve endings in your back muscles. By making them feel hot or cold, they are distracted from the pain of the muscle issue. In addition, the heat from these patches goes a long way toward soothing the muscles that have been strained or sprained. Large patches are probably the most convenient back pain home remedy of this type, but the cream may work better if your muscles are strained higher up on the back, to the side, or over a large area.
