2011 — Minor update: Just added a link, but a really great link! The CBC show Marketplace did an amazing job last year reporting on spinal decompression machines. Media William Lee Sorosky S, Stilp S, Akuthota V. "Yoga and pilates in the management of low back pain." Curr Rev Musculoskelet Med. 2008 Mar;1(1):39-47. I have a very extensive collection of acupuncture and Chinese medicine books that I have accumulated over the years. But honestly most of them don't live up to my preconceived expectations, so I'll read them maybe once just to validate my reason for buying them and then put them away on my book shelf where they will stay decorating the bookshelves. But there are always those rare gems that we we find ourselves always going back to always referencing. Brads books are in the gem category for me. If you want to get real good at treating back pain don’t wait, get this book.

Toggle navigation In the common presentation of acute low back pain, pain develops after movements that involve lifting, twisting, or forward-bending. The symptoms may start soon after the movements or upon waking up the following morning. The description of the symptoms may range from tenderness at a particular point to diffuse pain. It may or may not worsen with certain movements, such as raising a leg, or positions, such as sitting or standing. Pain radiating down the legs (known as sciatica) may be present. The first experience of acute low back pain is typically between the ages of 20 and 40. This is often a person's first reason to see a medical professional as an adult. Recurrent episodes occur in more than half of people with the repeated episodes being generally more painful than the first.
Most athletic injuries to the back are sprains of the ligaments or strains of the muscles surrounding the spine. Serious conditions or complications can have similar symptoms to those of a routine sprain or strain. The most common sports injuries occur after repetitive overuse of the spine either through twisting, compression, or flexion. High impact sports such as running, football, or volleyball can often cause low back pain. Sports like golf, in which repetitive twisting is often involved, can also cause low back pain.

4 Surprising Low-Back-Pain Triggers I found the [Consumer Reports] articles on back pain very disappointing. I hope I can still trust Consumer Reports when shopping for a washing machine, but I have no confidence that I can trust them when looking for an effective medical treatment. They seem not to understand the difference between anecdotes and data, between a popularity contest and a controlled scientific study. These articles may do harm by encouraging readers to try treatments that don’t work and by suggesting that it is reasonable to prioritize testimonial evidence over scientific studies. On the other hand, these articles may do some good insofar as they may dissuade some patients from rushing to a doctor and demanding imaging studies or prescription drugs.
