Patients with shingles usually have had chickenpox earlier in life. The herpes virus that causes chickenpox is believed to exist in a dormant state within the spinal nerve roots long after the chickenpox resolves. In people with shingles, this virus reactivates to cause infection along the sensory nerve, leading to nerve pain and usually an outbreak of shingles (tiny blisters on the same side of the body and at the same nerve level). The back pain in patients with shingles of the lumbar area can precede the skin rash by days. Successive crops of tiny blisters can appear for several days and clear with crusty inflammation in one to two weeks. Patients occasionally are left with a more chronic nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia). Treatment can involve symptomatic relief with lotions, such as calamine, or medications, such as acyclovir (Zovirax), for the infection and pregabalin (Lyrica) or lidocaine (Lidoderm) patches for the pain.

acupuncture, in which therapists insert hair-thin sterilized needles into precise points in the body to release blocked energy
Where can I get more information? News “A Skeptical Look at the Theories of Dr. John Sarno,” a webpage on BetterMovement.org. Superb and clearly written account of some of the main problems with Sarno’s work.
Acupuncture is moderately effective for chronic low back pain. It involves the insertion of thin needles into precise points throughout the body. Some practitioners believe this process helps clear away blockages in the body’s life force known as Qi (pronounced chee). Others who may not believe in the concept of Qi theorize that when the needles are inserted and then stimulated (by twisting or passing a low-voltage electrical current through them) naturally occurring painkilling chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin, and acetylcholine are released. Evidence of acupuncture’s benefit for acute low back pain is conflicting and clinical studies continue to investigate its benefits.
Low back pain is one of the most common complaints on the planet. And you may wonder where to turn when you start experiencing some of those aches or twinges in the lower part of your back. Take heart. "In most cases, you won't need a specialist," says Dr. Robert Shmerling, a rheumatologist at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Lower Back Pain Relief Pages: This worked for me! I am now free of back pain which has plagued me for 7 years. Not only this my Carpel Tunnel Syndromme CTS (hands/fingers going numb in the night - waking me up EVERY night - surgery proposed for both wrists) has also stopped. I saw a comment about Sarnos work around Easter, spent 2 weeks reading up on TMS - TMS WIki (forum), Healing Wall of Victory(youtube), Steve Ozanich etc. You listen to peoples stories and how TMS knowledge made them pain free, some of these people had been bedridden. You know these peoples stories are real because of the amount of detail they go into. You have to acknowledge that your brain is causing the pain, through supressed emotions and stress. I am a pretty laid back person, so this was difficult to acknowledge, but ultimately true. You have to convince yourself this is the truth, you read many peoples stories, you stop going to the osteo/chiro, using cushions, massage, stretches!!! I felt liberated. There is nothing wrong with my back, yes I have herniations but as we age everyones bodies deteriorate but not everyone has back pain. My herniations were not causing the pain, as I no longer have any pain. It took 3 weeks for the back pain to go and aprox another 3 weeks for all my CTS to stop. From what I have read this can help many other illnesses - migraines, stomach issues. This should be general knowledge not something it takes years to find out about.

"Core is a very generalized and often overused term by many today, so to get to the root issue takes an in-depth understanding of what needs to be corrected with regards to stabilization of the core."
