Allergy Sarno changed my life. I was in denial for a long time, but after I finally read the book and stopped my obsession with stretching, physical therapy, and other conventional treatments, I finally got better.
Intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET) is a treatment for discs that are cracked or bulging as a result of degenerative disc disease. The procedure involves inserting a catheter through a small incision at the site of the disc in the back. A special wire is passed through the catheter and an electrical current is applied to heat the disc, which helps strengthen the collagen fibers of the disc wall, reducing the bulging and the related irritation of the spinal nerve. IDET is of questionable benefit.

research bloopers (4) Imaging is not warranted for most patients with acute low back pain. Without signs and symptoms indicating a serious underlying condition, imaging does not improve clinical outcomes in these patients.9–11 Even with a few weaker red flags, four to six weeks of treatment is appropriate before consideration of imaging studies.8–10 If a serious condition is suspected, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is usually most appropriate. Computed tomography is an alternative if MRI is contraindicated or unavailable.10 Clinical correlation of MRI or computed tomography findings is essential because the likelihood of false-positive results increases with age.12–14 Radiography may be helpful to screen for serious conditions, but usually has little diagnostic value because of its low sensitivity and specificity.10
I was also assisted by many healers, including chiropractors, acupuncturists, osteopaths, massage therapists, yoga teachers, nutritionists, herbalists, and a host of others, some highly conventional, others quite unorthodox. Almost all of these healers helped me in one way or another, adding a new piece to the puzzle I was assembling on my way to reclaiming my wholeness.
Gently massaging a sore or tense muscle is one of the most effective ways to loosen it up and relieve pain. One study found that massage therapy along with traditional treatment:

Japon I had a back injury as a result of repetitive lifting in a work environment. Three herniated disks, the upper one being the most serious as it is against a nerve root Before being allowed to see a Dr the HR department made me go first to a chiropractor. I got relief after the first visit. Maintained after the second and the last two made it worse. Finally was sent on to a DR. I took a lot of prednisone and had cortisone shots in the back. Time did more then the medication... medication caused other health problems. The exercise was the most helpful treatment but the hardest to start. The shooting pain wasn't just down the leg but around my body... pretty much anyplace from my waist to my knees. I found that cutting caffeine and really pushing water was when I had the first noticeable improvement. Allowing the body to rehydrate the disks was something I learned from a nurse practitioner and it allowed me to really begin the exercise therapy. Others recommended bicycling. I cannot do that still. It causes too much side to side movement on the lower back. The only bicycling I can do is on a recumbent stationary. My greatest luck has been with pilates type exercises for the core and light to moderate weight training. Even after five years I cannot stand at the counter and do dishes with out significant pain. I cannot stand on concrete floors for more then about forty-five minutes without developing a limp. For pain, my best friend is my TENS machine.

Related The main treatments for back pain include: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are a highly detailed test and are very expensive. The test does not use X-rays but very strong magnets to produce images. Their routine use is discouraged in acute back pain unless a condition is present that may require immediate surgery, such as with cauda equina syndrome or when red flags are present and suggest infection of the spinal canal, bone infection, tumor, or fracture.
About Nancy Homesteading & Livestock “I consider that I practice very conservative, standard medicine,” Sarno says in the film. “My theories may involve the unconscious, but that doesn’t make them any less rigorous.” Still, Sarno’s success remains largely anecdotal and his methods have been largely unrecognized by the mainstream medical community.
