kathleen coleman PLUS Traditional Back Pain Remedies Fierce Reads 07-13-08 Manual therapy By Teresa Carr Giving to Mayo Clinic Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS) machines are small, battery-powered devices that transmit low-voltage electrical currents through electrodes that are attached to your skin. Considered very safe, TENS machines, according to one theory, work by scrambling the message of pain to the brain — literally blocking it. Another theory suggests that the electrical impulses cause a release of endorphins that override the sensation of pain. Many back pain patients have had success with TENS machines, though their effectiveness has not been clearly proven in controlled studies. Ask your doctor or physical therapist if this therapy might be right for you.

Soon he noticed improvements, gradually adding more exercise and hands-on therapies, which he says manage his pain while keeping his “mind, body, and spirit strong.” And he has become so good at tai chi that he now studies with a grand master. “It’s given me back my life,” Sells says.

John E. Sarno, a doctor at New York University whose controversial books on the psychological origins of chronic pain sold over a million copies, even while he was largely ignored or maligned by many of his medical peers, died Thursday in Danbury, Conn. He was 93.

My experience was similar to yours, Stephan, while I read 'Healing Back Pain' in 2010. I saw myself....a lightbulb moment. I have also bought several copies of Sarno's books and given them out. I would say it has been 99.9 % effective for me. Most people I have given the book to assumed they knew what it was about and didn't read it...but just wrote it off. Or, they lied and said they read it but I knew they didn't by the incorrect things they said about it. Many people just aren't open to the whole concept. Their loss. I am glad I was one of.the 20% for whom it worked. Thanks for posting about this. I hope you reach more people with this post.
Traction, using pulleys and weights to lengthen and stretch the spine can result in temporary relief. Both techniques will not treat any underlying causes of back pain, but rather offer a temporary relief from lower back pain.
Audiobooks Electronics Turntables I started having back pain after I became overly sedentary as a result of a meniscus tear. At first, I thought the pain was weight related, but when it didn't go away with weight loss, I decided it was muscle atrophy. But it didn't go away with weight training (I worked for a few months with one of Doug McGuff's BBS trainers) either.
< back to results | You are here: There is probably no other medical condition which is treated in so many different ways and by such a variety of practitioners as back pain. Though the conclusion may be uncomfortable, the medical community must bear the responsibility for this, for is has been distressingly narrow in its approach to the problem. It has been trapped by a diagnostic bias of ancient vintage and, most uncharacteristically, has uncritically accepted an unproven concept, that structural abnormalities are the cause of back pain.
She read the first 3 chapters and the pain literally ceased, it came back a few times over the next few weeks but she just recognized it and told it to go and it did, been in great health for over 3 years now no probs, highly recommend this book!
See all 17 formats and editions There are several reasons why I think it is better than Sarno’s book:
disease (77) Diet NBA Professionally-verified articles You say that ‘the pain went away almost completely, without changing my posture or movement patterns, when I read Healing Back Pain.’ Clearly you have benefitted remarkably from Dr Sarno’s approach and if you are persuaded that his approach holds the answer for you, perhaps there is no need to seek further. However, I do note that after ten years, whilst your pain has ‘90 percent gone’ you still get ‘occasional flare-ups’ involving ‘some new location for the pain’. Whilst it is impossible to say what would have happened had you invested a similar length of time in learning the Alexander Technique, my own experience is that it increases self-knowledge in such a way that one can perceive in a concrete, cause-and-effect way exactly what one is doing to cause one’s pain and prevent it, rather than getting these seemingly random ‘flare-ups’ in different locations, with no obvious cause.

Keep Your Heart Heathy I have been in at times excruciating chronic pain daily following an operation on my foot in 2011. I'd had a serious accident as a teenager, where I nearly lost my foot and this operation was to remove some metal work 20 odd years later. Since the day of my op, I had no respite from the pain and as you can imagine my life became hell. Finally I was told I had severe sciatica and was put under a pain clinic where I was given physio, very strong nerve pills and painkillers, acupuncture and mindfulness/relaxation techniques. I even paid myself for chiropractic treatment (which made my pain worse). NOTHING has worked in all these years. The pain was mainly in my left calf, side of foot and toes as well as in my lower back and buttock. I had deep aching, stabbing pains, burning and pins and needles and numbness.

Corsets are adjustable and elastic; braces are sturdier and have metal stays. Both reduce pressure on the discs -- small, circular cushions of tissue that act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae (the bones of the spine); provide back and abdominal support; and keep the spine stable while it heals. Braces are often prescribed for temporary pain relief. They are also prescribed as a way to restrict movement of the spine during recovery from a fractured vertebra or certain surgeries.
