Must redeem within 90 days. To my best recollection, my back trouble began when I was about 21 years old. I was still in school when I took a job loading and unloading trucks at a large warehouse to help support myself. I put in long, grueling days that involved a lot of lifting. It seemed like the "manly" thing to do, and besides, I was young and strong and enjoyed sweating and doing hard physical labor. I was at that age when I thought I was invincible. I never said no to work of any kind. In fact, I never said no to much of anything, and that, I discovered later, was a major drawback to the future health of my spine.

Activity modification. One variant of resting is to stay active but avoid activities and positions that aggravate the pain. For example, if long periods of sitting in a car or at a desk make the pain worse, then set a timer to get up every 20 minutes and walk around or gently stretch. If standing makes the pain worse, avoid chores that require standing such as washing dishes at the sink. Avoiding, or minimizing, activities and positions that worsen the pain will help prevent or reduce painful back spasms and allow for a better healing environment.

Mass Market Top Products I am 34 and have had back pain for 3+ years which started after a bar opened up next door to me and I was forced to move a few months later due to the noise. The pain came on one morning and by lunchtime a colleague at work had to take me to the hospital because my back was locked in spasm and I could not stand up. I was always active, walking and biking to work, but now I had so much tension in my back muscles everything hurt. With relaxants I began walking again, but it was never the same and I would sometimes spend days in bed reading because everything seemed to cause spasms. Over the following 3 years I saw doctors, had x-rays, MRI, Neurologist, physiatrist, podiatrist, and twice each had three month sessions with; chiropractor, osteopath, masseuse, and acupucture. The only thing that helped a bit to release the tension was valium or whiskey, but even that was minimal. I described to each doctor or specialist I met that it started when a bar opened up next to me, but none of them saw a correlation.

Degenerative bone and joint conditions: As we age, the water and protein content of the body's cartilage changes. This change results in weaker, thinner, and more fragile cartilage. Because both the discs and the joints that stack the vertebrae (facet joints) are partly composed of cartilage, these areas are subject to wear and tear over time (degenerative changes). Degeneration of the disc is called spondylosis. Spondylosis can be noted on X-rays of the spine as a narrowing of the normal "disc space" between the vertebrae. It is the deterioration of the disc tissue that predisposes the disc to herniation and localized lumbar pain ("lumbago") in older patients. Degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) of the facet joints is also a cause of localized lumbar pain that can be detected with plain X-ray testing. These causes of degenerative back pain are usually treated conservatively with intermittent heat, rest, rehabilitative exercises, and medications to relieve pain, muscle spasm, and inflammation.

Physical Therapy. Physical therapists often recommend the McKenzie method or spine stabilization exercises for the treatment of low back pain. The McKenzie method is described at http://www.mckenziemdt.org/approach.cfm, and a video demonstration is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBOp-ugJbTQ. The McKenzie method has been shown to be slightly more effective than other common low back pain treatments; however, the difference is not clinically significant,26,27 and evidence on its effect on disability is conflicting.26,27 There also do not appear to be good long-term benefits with the McKenzie method, other than decreased need for health care services.27 Spine stabilization exercises have been shown to decrease pain, disability, and risk of recurrence after a first episode of back pain.28

Paul, who runs painscience.com, is affiliated with Steve et. al. & has done some work on the SBM site so I don't know the specifics of what you read but I wouldn't take it as "their" (SBM's) official stance until they specifically address Sarno. He's kind of supportive so SBM may be too.

Anyways, my point was that ignoring psychosomatic reasons for pain is huge issue as so many people suffer from it, but it should not in anyway mean that other valid reasons can be ignored. It is important to rule out any possible physical reasons for pain as well, but I must underline that the doctor should be very careful and conscious here. Misdiagnose is always an issue, no matter which way it happens.
