Abstract Nephrology Sarno is the only expert I know of who is willing to say that spondylolisthesis and stenosis are rarely primary causes of low back pain even when they are obviously present, and he has only his clinical experience to support the claim. However, his experience is significant, particularly in light of all the other evidence that structural deformities do not cause low back pain. It’s not a great leap! With regards to spondylolisthesis, Sarno writes: “I have had a number of patients with this abnormality and have found in each case that the patient also had TMS [same as MPS — PI]. In every case the pain was eliminated by proper treatment for TMS, suggeting that spondylolisthesis was not the cause” (p25). This is followed by a “dramatic case history.” With regards to stenosis, “… it has been my experience this ‘abnormality’ is rarely responsible for leg or back pain” (p27). For my part, for now I accept that these two conditions may cause pain, but not inevitably — and I eagerly await the day when research is done to investigate Sarno’s claim.

2.20 Could it be a herniated disc? This extremely popular 2017 article on Vox.com the “new science” of low back pain was praised by many because it superficially seems to be very modern and science-y, and it correctly dismisses a number of myths, but I think it’s an exasperating failure. It creates a strong impression of being scientifically rigorous without actually being so. It brims with promising science news about alternative treatments that do not actually stand up to more cynical and experienced analysis. Adding to the façade of scientific credibility, many of the right caveats and disclaimers about the “new science” are technically there — warnings about small effect sizes, mixed evidence, and potential flaws — but these cautions are also belated and consistently understated. The tone is overwhelmingly sunny and naïve, as though we are on the verge of a revolution in back pain treatment thanks to … a bunch of stuff that has been around forever and has clearly not been saving the world from chronic low back pain.

Video: Why is Exercise Important for Lower Back Pain? Diagnoses P-Z When is Surgery a Good Idea for Back Pain? Therese Stenzel My life stopped for several months back in 2012 when I all the sudden got really severe leg pain. It was like someone would have been stabbing me with the knife to my leg. On the other hand occasionally the pain was more like electric shocks. The bottom line is that the severity of the pain was something that was really difficult for me to handle.
Then, I began to understand that my physical pain, powerful as it was, was just the tip of the iceberg. A much deeper emotional and spiritual pain had been buried in my soul and suppressed for years. My physical pain was making me aware of my emotional and mental pain. As I worked with my body, I found myself reflecting on painful issues in my life, from incidents of my early childhood, up through the present day.

I will establish this in the sections ahead with a steady supply of clearly explained references to the medical literature that patients can understand and professionals can respect. This extra layer of information in easy-to-use footnotes is available for any reader who wants to dig deeper and check my facts. For example, here’s a good start: In 2010, the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery reported that “the quality and content of health information on the internet is highly variable for common sports medicine topics,” such as knee pain and low back pain — a bit of an understatement, really. Expert reviewers examined about 75 top-ranked commercial websites and another 30 academic sites. They gave each a quality score on a scale of 100. The average score? Barely over 50!
